What 𘐼 means
Use a Tangut input method and an app with a Tangut font.
If 𘐼 appears as a box, the app's font may lack Tangut coverage. As of 2026, Raycosine's browser Tangut input tool reports that some mobile apps fail to render Tangut text; its Noto Serif Tangut and Tangut Yinchuan Beta fallback fonts also draw the script in different styles.
What does 𘐼 mean?
Read it in Tangut context; its page label is an identifier.
“Tangut character” names the writing system, not a translation of 𘐼. The surrounding Tangut word or passage is needed to interpret how this exact character functions.
Tangut writing developed around 1036 under Western Xia (Xixia) ruler Li Yuanhao for state-building and work on a Buddhist canon in Tangut. Its design drew structural inspiration from Chinese writing and followed the earlier precedent of Khitan scripts, while helping mark cultural distance from Song China.
The earliest transmitted Tangut document is an official message to a military inspector dated 1072. A stone inscription dates to 1094; Western Xia fell in 1227, and a later inscription from 1502 shows the script outlasted the state. Tangut texts include government records, Buddhist scripture, law codes, Chinese and Tibetan translations, Confucian works, and literature.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𘐼 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
