How did Tangut script develop?
It served state, religious and literary life.
Created by imperial order, the script supported Western Xia state-building and a Tangut collection of Buddhist scriptures. Its forms drew on Chinese writing, but it was a separate system; Tangut rulers also followed the example of the neighboring Khitan people in creating their own script.
After Western Xia fell in 1227, Tangut manuscripts and Buddhist printing continued under the Mongol-ruled Yuan dynasty. Surviving works include translations from Chinese and Tibetan, as well as texts first composed in Tangut.
