tangut ideograph-18445

Tangut character 18445

5190/6136

𘑅 is a Tangut character for the extinct Tangut language of the Western Xia kingdom in northwestern China. It resembles Chinese writing but is a separate script; its Unicode name is a catalog label, not a reading or translation. Created around 1036, Tangut remained in use after Western Xia fell in 1227; Buddhist pillars from 1502 attest its later use. Without a Tangut-capable font, it may appear as a box.

What 𘑅 means

Three Tangut components make up its documented structure. Components are structural parts used to analyze the script. One analysis places 𘦳 on the left and stacks 𘢸 above 𘧰 on the right. This describes the written form; it does not by itself translate the character.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𘑅 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
