What 𘑆 means

Use a Unicode character picker to enter U18446.

Tangut has no standard keyboard layout on most keyboards. The receiving app also needs a font that supports Tangut; otherwise 𘑆 may appear as a missing-glyph box.

What does 𘑆 mean?

A Tangut dictionary glosses it as “cattail” or “reed.”

Li Fanwen's Tangut–Chinese dictionary index links 𘑆 to entry 5649, gives the reconstructed reading phjɨ, and uses Chinese 蒲 as its gloss. In English, 蒲 here means “cattail” or “reed.”

That is a word gloss, not a message reaction; read it as a plant term when it appears in Tangut text. The numeric Unicode label identifies the character; it does not translate the word.

Why was Tangut writing created?

It served the Tangut state, religion, and cultural identity.

In 1036, Emperor Li Yuanhao ordered the script as part of state-building. It supported government and a Tangut Buddhist Canon—a translated collection of Buddhist scriptures—alongside a distinct identity from the Song dynasty of China.

Khara-khoto, a ruined medieval city, preserves manuscripts probably from the 12th or early 13th century with Buddhist, legal, and secular translations. Later Tangut works also included military and literary texts.

Tangut writing followed the earlier example of state scripts used by the Khitan people and was visually inspired by Chinese writing, but it was not derived from Chinese. Its use continued into the mid-Ming period. Chinese 蒲 is a dictionary gloss for this Tangut word, not an interchangeable Tangut form.

This belongs in Tangut writing or historical discussion; in ordinary chat it reads as specialist and historical.

The numeric Unicode label identifies the character; it does not translate its word.
