tangut ideograph-1845a

Tangut ideograph 1845A

5211/6136

𘑚 is a Tangut character, but its catalogue label does not tell you its word meaning. A specialist index lists it as L1016, entry 189 under 𘦷; those are lookup details, not a translation. It belongs in Tangut transcription and study, and its resemblance to Chinese writing does not make it a Chinese character.

Text symbol

What 𘑚 means

The index identifies the glyph; it does not give a word meaning. 𘑚 is a Tangut character. A Tangut dictionary's radical index lists it as L1016, entry 189, under 𘦷. Those are lookup details, not an English translation; the character's meaning must be read from its Tangut text or a full dictionary entry.

In 1036, the Western Xia ruler Li Yuanhao established the Tangut script to support the state and a distinct Tangut identity; it was also used to translate Buddhist texts. Later Tangut books included Chinese classics, military works, literature, contracts, and economic records. An undated manuscript known as the Khara-Khoto manuscript probably dates to the 12th or early 13th century, and Tangut texts continued after the Xia state fell in 1227. The script followed the example of state scripts used by the neighboring Khitan people and drew on Chinese writing principles, but it was not directly derived from either.

Why does 𘑚 show as a box or look different?

A box means missing font support; small stroke differences can reflect the font. A missing-glyph box appears when a font or application cannot draw the character. Unicode 17.0 documents Tangut variant glyph forms and code-chart corrections, so small differences in strokes may reflect font design or a chart revision rather than a different character.

Before assuming the source text is damaged, check that the font supports Tangut. A Han character that looks similar is not an exact substitute.

This glyph points to work with Tangut texts, archives, or type design.

Do not substitute a Han character based only on visual resemblance.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𘑚 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
