Tangut Component 440

𘦷 is a Tangut component used to index and describe full Tangut characters, not a standalone Tangut word. In Tangut (Xixia) reference work it serves as an organizing token; sent alone, it usually signals a script-identification or font question. Its appearance depends on Tangut-capable font support and design.

What 𘦷 means

It is a recurring part used to index and analyze complete Tangut characters. “Component-440” is a sequential Unicode label, not a traditional gloss or a word's translation.

The Tangut (also called Xixia) script wrote the Tangut language and served the Western Xia state. It was used for official writing, and Buddhist and Chinese works were translated into it; documented use runs from 1036 through 1502. The script drew on Chinese writing traditions, but this exact component is not itself a Chinese character.

Why does Tangut Component 440 look different in another font?

The character stays the same; fonts control how it looks. A Tangut-capable font draws it in its own style. If the selected font lacks support, the display may show a box or blank.

Unicode's Tangut component set draws on analyses from dictionaries and publications, while scholars use more than one component system. An index's analysis can therefore vary, as can a font's drawing. Neither change makes this a different character.

How do I type Tangut Component 440?

Use a Unicode-aware editor with a Tangut-capable font. In HTML, write 𘦷; in JavaScript, use \u{189B7}; in Python, use \U000189B7.

Writing components side by side will not assemble a finished Tangut character. An Ideographic Description Sequence (IDS) is separate notation that describes an ideograph's parts and arrangement; it does not instruct the font to build the glyph.

Specialist and archival; alone, it reads as an identification prompt or font test.

The component number is a label, not a word's translation.

Why does 𘦷 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
