Tangut Ideograph 1848D

5262/6136

What 𘒍 means

Use a Unicode escape in code or a Tangut input method.

In JavaScript, write \u{1848D}; in Python, write \U0001848D; in HTML, use 𘒍.

Specialist Tangut input tools also offer stroke-based and reconstructed-phonetic entry for longer passages.

What does 𘒍 mean?

A Tangut dictionary is needed for its reading and meaning.

The Unicode Tangut source record maps 𘒍 to L2008-0934, a catalogue reference to Li Fanwen's Tangut–Chinese Dictionary, published in 2008. Structural index 458.14 helps locate the character among Tangut entries; Unicode describes Tangut components as structural rather than semantic. Neither the algorithmic name nor the index gives a translation or reading.

The Tangut script emerged in the Western Xia period around 1037 to write the Tangut language. Surviving books include Buddhist translations, legal and military works, Confucian classics, encyclopedias, and literature, showing its use in state, religious, and literary life. One scholarly interpretation says a distinct script also marked political and cultural distance from Song China. Tangut writing continued in manuscripts and inscriptions after Western Xia fell; one known inscription is dated 1502. Tangut script was modeled on Chinese and Khitan writing, another East Asian script; that is a connection between writing systems, not proof that 𘒍 is a Chinese character.

Why does 𘒍 look different?

A Tangut-capable font is required.

𘒍 is a text character, and your device's font supplies its shape. Without Tangut coverage, it may appear as an empty box or another missing-glyph marker. Tangut fonts can also use corrected or variant forms, so the picture may differ while the Unicode character remains the same.

Specialized and scholarly: useful in Tangut text, historical quotations, and linguistic data.

The Unicode label is not its dictionary meaning.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𘒍 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.

Why is 𘒍 a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
