What 𘒎 means
Its dictionary gloss is “market.”
Tangut was the historical language of Western Xia, a kingdom in what is now northwestern China. The script is also called Xixia; it was created under the kingdom’s first emperor about 1036 CE to write Tangut.
After Western Xia fell to Mongol conquest, Tangut texts continued in the Yuan and Ming dynasties, but the script was obsolete by the end of the Ming dynasty. It was rediscovered in the late 19th century and largely deciphered in the early 20th.
Someone sent me 𘒎—what does it mean?
Start with its historical Tangut meaning: “market.”
A single character does not explain why the sender chose it: they may be discussing the word, showing Tangut writing, or relying on context from an earlier message. Ask what they mean before treating it as a shopping request.
Tangut sources preserve variant glyph shapes, and Unicode allows some non-contrastive forms to share one encoded character. An outline difference alone does not prove that the written character changed.
Is 𘒎 Chinese or Tangut?
It is Tangut, a separate writing system.
Tangut characters have a square style that can resemble Chinese writing, but Tangut is unrelated to the Chinese Han script. Similar appearance does not make the writing systems interchangeable.
The Chinese character 市 can also mean “market,” but it is a Han character, not the Tangut glyph. The shared English gloss does not make the characters substitutes.
Historical Tangut vocabulary; in casual messages, the character needs context to show why it appears.
Do not treat it as a shopping request without context.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𘒎 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
