Tangut character 184AE

5295/6136

What 𘒮 means

A Tangut dictionary glosses it as “to supervise.” That means overseeing people or work. The Unicode inventory label identifies the character; it does not translate it.

Tangut writing was created under the first emperor of Western Xia, a Tangut kingdom, around 1036. It appeared in official and private writing, as well as religious works such as Buddhist texts and inscriptions. The word’s meaning comes from its place in a Tangut sentence, not from the strokes alone.

Why does 𘒮 resemble Chinese writing?

Tangut has a Chinese-influenced visual style but is a distinct script. Tangut and Chinese are not mutually readable, so a familiar-looking shape does not make this a Chinese character.

Tangut writing remained in use after Western Xia fell before eventually becoming obsolete. Scholars deciphered it with help from bilingual inscriptions, glossaries, and recovered manuscript collections. A complete translation of 𘒮 still depends on the surrounding Tangut text.

What does it mean when someone sends 𘒮?

Treat it as a Tangut word sample or script reference. The dictionary gloss does not show that the sender is telling you to supervise anything. If there is no accompanying text, ask what Tangut writing they are referring to.

Historical and specialist; alone in a message, it is best read as a Tangut text sample or script reference.

Do not read it as a Chinese word just from its shape.

1

Why does 𘒮 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.

Why is 𘒮 a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
