What 𘓨 means

A scholarly reading exists; it gives sound, not an English gloss.

The Tangut script was developed for the Tangut language under the Western Xia court, in what is now northwestern China, around 1036. It served government, inscriptions, books and personal writing; one major purpose was producing Tangut Buddhist texts. Its visual model drew on Chinese writing, but it records a different language.

The Tangut vocabulary text Homonyms records 𘓨 as ²ror₁ on folio 12A. Read it roughly as “ro” with rising pitch. The opening ² marks the rising tone; final r signals a slightly curled-back vowel, not an extra consonant, and ₁ identifies its grade in the reconstruction. This is a reconstructed sound, not an English gloss. A Tangut–Chinese dictionary indexes it as L2008-1275. The book was composed after 1188. After Western Xia fell in 1227, Tangut writing continued under the Yuan and Ming dynasties before falling out of use by the end of the Ming dynasty.

What if someone sends 𘓨?

Ask which Tangut word or text the sender intends.

As of 2026, 𘓨 has no established everyday chat use. Its historical sound notation does not reveal what an isolated sender intended.

How do I type 𘓨?

Use a Unicode-aware editor or character picker.

If your keyboard has no Tangut layout, enter U184E8 through the app’s Unicode input or character picker; steps vary by software. If it displays as a blank box, choose a font and app with Tangut coverage. Different Tangut fonts may draw it differently.

Historical and scholarly; its sound reconstruction uses specialist notation.

Do not read ²ror₁ as an English translation.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𘓨 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.

Why is 𘓨 a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
