Tangut character 184E6

5351/6136

𘓦 is a Tangut character glossed “be awake.” It appears in historical Western Xia writing; the dictionary gloss names a state, not a complete instruction. If 𘓦 appears as a box, your font lacks Tangut coverage.

What 𘓦 means

Tangut dictionaries gloss it as “be awake.”

The gloss describes wakefulness; by itself, the character does not say who should be awake or when.

Why was Tangut writing created?

It gave Western Xia a script for government and Buddhist texts.

In 1036, Li Yuanhao, ruler of the Tangut-led Western Xia state, established the Tangut script. It drew on Chinese and neighboring Khitan writing models while remaining distinct.

The script served administration and Buddhist translation. Manuscripts, inscriptions, and printed texts show it still in use during the Yuan and Ming eras.

1

Why does 𘓦 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
