A Tangut dictionary or the surrounding sentence can help work out how this exact character is read and what it means.
Why was the Tangut script created?
For the Western Xia state and a Buddhist canon.
Created in 1036 under Western Xia ruler Li Yuanhao, it followed neighboring Khitan states' example of having their own scripts. Its design drew on Chinese writing principles, but Tangut remained a separate script.
Tangut writing continued during the Yuan and Ming dynasties after Western Xia ended. By 2026, scholarship was its main setting.
