tangut ideograph-1850a

Tangut Character 1850A

5387/6136

𘔊 is a Tangut character, but surviving dictionary indexes do not give it a plain-language meaning. Tangut was created around 1036 for the Western Xia state and remained in use into the Yuan and Ming periods. A box in place of the glyph means the chosen font lacks Tangut coverage.

What 𘔊 means

The surviving catalogues place the sign, but do not translate it. Tangut is a separate script created for the Tangut language and influenced by Chinese writing. The Sea of Writing, a Tangut dictionary, lists 𘔊 in its “Rhyme 28” filing group; that location is not a gloss.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𘔊 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
