What 𘔝 means
Use a Tangut-specific input method.
A Tangut input method is software that turns keystrokes into Tangut characters. BabelPad documents stroke-code and phonetic entry; Rime Xunpin documents phonetic, stroke, and four-corner entry. The computer also needs a font with Tangut coverage.
What does 𘔝 mean?
It is a Tangut character with a reconstructed reading.
The Tangut index label L1858 identifies this entry. A reconstruction based on Li Fanwen's Tangut dictionary gives the reading *njij²; another phonetic database lists *ne for L1858 with different tone notation. These are scholarly spellings of proposed Tangut pronunciations, not English definitions.
As of 2026, reference listings identify L1858 but do not give a settled everyday English gloss for 𘔝. The Unicode label is generated from the code point, so it names the encoded character rather than translating the Tangut word.
Why was Tangut writing created?
It served the Tangut state and its language.
The Tangut script was officially created in 1036 for the Western Xia state (1038–1227), to write Tangut, educate readers, and translate major Chinese texts.
It appears in printed books, inscriptions, and Buddhist works. Later, the script also became a subject of dictionary study, reconstructed readings, font design, and digital input.
Historical and specialist; understanding its reading requires Tangut-language context.
The Unicode label names an encoded character; it is not a word translation.
