What 𘔻 means
It is Tangut writing; its label does not translate it.
The Tangut character 1853B belongs to a script created under the first emperor of Western Xia, a Tangut-ruled state, around 1036–37. It served state use, official texts, and Buddhist translations. Tangut writing continued under the Yuan and Ming after Western Xia fell; the latest known Tangut inscription is dated 1502. That shift from state and religious communication to preservation and study describes the script's history, not this glyph's individual first appearance.
Unicode's source index links this character to L2008-2877 in Li Fanwen's 2008 Tangut–Chinese Dictionary. A 2018 table of reconstructed Tangut sounds gives a different transcription from the dictionary, so these labels identify a research entry rather than a settled English gloss.
Is 𘔻 Chinese?
No. Tangut is a separate script influenced by Chinese and Khitan writing.
It records the Tangut language, now extinct, in its own writing system. Its visual resemblance to Chinese writing reflects those influences, but it does not make 𘔻 a Han character. Tangut dictionaries also group characters by recurring components for lookup; those parts do not guarantee a character's meaning.
A reader familiar with Chinese writing may recognize the style without being able to read Tangut. Similar-looking Han characters are not substitutes, and no Chinese translation follows from 𘔻's shape.
What does 𘔻 mean when sent alone?
Read it as a script sample, not a complete message.
A Tangut specialist may use a lone character as a dictionary or sound example; other readers may see only an unfamiliar Chinese-looking glyph. In casual chat, it is more likely to signal interest in Tangut than to convey a shared reaction. The surrounding Tangut text or an accompanying translation gives it context; its shape alone does not.
If it appears as a square or blank, the receiving app or font may lack Tangut glyph support. That display failure does not by itself mean the underlying character changed.
Scholarly or archival in context; alone in casual chat, it reads as a Tangut script sample, not a shared reaction.
Do not treat its Unicode label as a translation or replace it with a Chinese lookalike.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𘔻 show as a square?
The receiving font or app probably lacks a Tangut glyph. The character may still be intact; a square is a display failure, not evidence of a different character.
