Tangut Ideograph 1854D

5454/6136

𘕍 is indexed in Li Fanwen’s Tangut dictionary as a transliteration sign, with a reconstructed pronunciation rather than a standalone English gloss. Its role is clearer in a Tangut word or translated passage than on its own. The Tangut script was created for the Western Xia state.

What 𘕍 means

It is indexed as a Tangut transliteration sign.

Li Fanwen’s dictionary index gives a reconstructed pronunciation—a scholarly estimate of how the sign sounded—and files the entry under “a transliteration.” That label describes its role; it is not a complete English translation.

A Tangut word or translated passage supplies the context needed to interpret it. The glyph alone does not name a specific English object or idea.

Why does 𘕍 look Chinese?

Tangut borrowed a visual tradition, not the Chinese script itself. The script was created around 1036 under Western Xia ruler Li Yuanhao as a state-building project. It followed a Khitan model of giving a new state its own writing system. Scholars connect its main practical purpose to preparing a Tangut Buddhist Canon, a collection of Buddhist scriptures, and giving the state a written identity distinct from Song China.

A 1070/1071 court-case record is reported as a candidate for the earliest known dated Tangut writing, later than the script’s creation. Tangut later carried Buddhist sutras, official records, private writing, and translations of Confucian teachings, military works, and literature. It remained in use for a time after Western Xia fell, then became obsolete.

Historical and scholarly; its dictionary reading is an estimate, not a ready-made English translation.

Do not assign it a Chinese reading just because its strokes look familiar.

Drift: Tangut survives mainly in scholarship, digital texts, fonts, and specialist input tools as of 2026; it is no longer an everyday writing system.

Why does 𘕍 show as a square?

A font without Tangut coverage may replace it with an empty box or leave it blank. The text can still contain 𘕍; the app needs a font with Tangut coverage to display it.
