What 𘕡 means
It is glossed as “graceful” or “elegant.”
Scholars write its reconstructed Tangut reading as *zewr. A reconstructed reading is an evidence-based estimate drawn from surviving texts, not a modern pronunciation guide. Historical Tangut readers encountered it within written words; later readers reach its gloss through scholarly reconstruction.
Tangut script was created in 1036 on Emperor Li Yuanhao’s order as part of state-building. Its aims included a Tangut Buddhist canon—a collection of Buddhist scripture—and a distinct political identity from Song China. The neighboring Khitan people had created two scripts about a century earlier, one largely based on Chinese writing. Tangut writing drew visual and structural inspiration from Chinese and followed this Khitan example, but did not derive from Chinese. Tangut books included Buddhist texts, Chinese classics, military works, literature in translation, and works composed in Tangut. It outlasted the Western Xia state: as of 2023, the latest known Tangut inscription was dated 1502.
