Tangut ideograph 18566

𘕦 is a Tangut character; dictionary entry 5773 is indexed under “evidence.” Tangut writing served the Western Xia state, and this historical character needs a Tangut-capable font. If it displays as a box, the font lacks its glyph.

Text symbol

What 𘕦 means

Its Tangut word is indexed under the gloss “evidence.”

Li Fanwen’s scholarly dictionary of Tangut assigns this character to entry L2008-5773; the English index lists entry 5773 under “evidence.” That is a gloss for the Tangut word the character represented, not a meaning readers can infer from its shape.

If someone sends 𘕦 alone, a reader who cannot read Tangut cannot identify its word from the glyph. Ask for a translation or context; “evidence” is not a universal meaning carried by the shape.

How did Tangut writing begin?

It was created for Western Xia in the eleventh century.

Western Xia was a Tangut-ruled state in what is now northwestern China. Historical accounts connect the script’s creation and promulgation with ruler Li Yuanhao and official Yeli Renrong. It was designed to write Tangut, a Sino-Tibetan language, for government, literature, and religion. Its strokes and components follow Chinese writing principles, but it shares almost no characters with Chinese.

A scholarly history cites an official military document dated 1072 as the earliest transmitted Tangut document; a stone inscription at a Liangzhou pagoda followed in 1094. Mongol armies destroyed Western Xia in 1227, but Tangut writing continued on Buddhist and monumental objects, including an inscription dated 1502. The script’s later record is preserved in dictionaries, fonts, and academic study.

Why does 𘕦 show as a box?

Your font may lack this Tangut character.

A font needs Tangut coverage to draw the glyph. If none of your installed fonts includes it, your screen may show an empty box or fallback mark. That placeholder is a display problem; it does not change the character.

Scholarly and historical; it makes sense with a Tangut translation or dictionary reference.

Do not use it as a self-explaining “evidence” icon.

1

Why does 𘕦 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
