tangut ideograph-1856a

Tangut Character

5483/6136

𘕪 is a Tangut character used to write the language of the Western Xia state; it is not a Chinese character or an emoji. The Tangut script was established in 1036–1038 to record that language alongside Chinese, with square forms modeled on Chinese writing. Across its history, it served official documents, inscriptions, and Buddhist texts; a Buddhist monument dated 1502 shows that writing continued after Western Xia fell in 1227.

Why does 𘕪 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
