What 𘕫 means
It means a male speaker’s brother, without specifying age.
Tangut kinship words can depend on whether the person speaking or writing is male or female. This character belongs to the male speaker’s set; “male speaker” describes the speaker, not the brother.
Examples use it for both older and younger brothers, so “elder brother” alone is too narrow. Some earlier analyses treated 𘀀 as its age-marked counterpart, but closer readings of Tangut passages do not support age as the reliable dividing line.
When did Tangut writing begin?
The script was created about 1036 CE.
The Tangut script was created under the first emperor of the Western Xia state to write the Tangut language. It is a separate writing system from Chinese characters.
It served official, private, and religious writing, including law codes, manuscripts, sutras, and inscriptions. Tangut writing continued after Western Xia fell, into the Yuan and Ming eras in China. The 1502 Baoding dhāraṇī pillars—Buddhist monuments inscribed with sacred formulas—are a later dated example associated with a Tangut community.
Alone in a modern message, it reads as a Tangut or historical reference, or as specialist interest.
“Elder brother” is too narrow unless context establishes that age.
