Text symbol

What 𘖕 means

It is a Tangut character with “restless” as one documented gloss.

A Unicode proposal comparing Tangut character sets glosses it as “restless.” The Tangut dictionary entry it cites, number 5230, appears under “to shrink” in an English index. The two source trails leave the exact gloss unsettled.

Where did 𘖕 come from?

It belongs to the Tangut script created for Western Xia.

The Tangut script was created under Western Xia’s first emperor around 1036 to write the Tangut language. It was used in official, private, and religious writing, including Buddhist scriptures, legal documents, and inscriptions.

The script drew partly on Chinese and Khitan writing traditions, but it wrote Tangut rather than Chinese. Tangut writing continued after Western Xia fell; the latest known inscription is dated 1502.

Why does 𘖕 show as a square?

A font without Tangut coverage may show an empty box.

The font supplies the character’s shape. If the selected font lacks Tangut support, the app may use a fallback square; that box signals a missing glyph, not a different character.

A historical Tangut character whose English gloss depends on the source.

Don’t treat “restless” as a settled one-word translation.

Questions people ask

1

Why do sources give different glosses?

The sources disagree because the proposal cites a Tangut dictionary entry whose English index gives a different gloss: “restless” versus “to shrink.”

Why is 𘖕 a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
