Tangut character 185A3

5540/6136

A Unicode-aware character picker or editor is the practical way to enter 𘖣. It is a Tangut character from a writing system created for Western Xia. A dictionary reconstructs its sound, but that reading alone is not an English gloss.

What does 𘖣 mean?

𘖣 is a Tangut character; its meaning depends on the surrounding word. A reference index to Li Fanwen’s Tangut dictionary lists it as LFW 4738 with the reconstructed reading kiər¹; other scholarly systems write kyr₂ or kə̣̂¹. These are scholars’ reconstructions of how the Tangut word sounded, not English translations.

The Tangut script was created in 1036 for Western Xia state-building and Buddhist texts. A manuscript from Khara-Khoto, a ruined city where Tangut texts survived, probably dates to the 12th or early 13th century. Other surviving works include official records, Chinese and Tibetan translations, Confucian writings, military treatises, and literature.

Tangut writing took visual inspiration from Chinese characters and developed alongside scripts promoted by neighboring Khitan states, but it remained a separate writing system.

What does it mean when someone sends 𘖣?

By itself, it gives no clear message to translate. Treat it as a reference to Tangut writing and ask what word, passage, or source the sender has in mind.

In a present-day message, it reads as a deliberate reference to Tangut writing.

Its Chinese-inspired appearance does not make it Chinese writing.

Why is 𘖣 a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
