What 𘗘 means
Read it as “benefit” or “increase.”
Li Fanwen’s Tangut–Chinese dictionary lists 𘗘 as entry 5429 and uses the Chinese character 益 to explain its sense. The reconstructed Tangut reading is written po, roughly the syllable “po.” 益 is a Chinese gloss, not another form of the Tangut character.
Tangut was the language and script used by the Western Xia kingdom. Its script was created around 1036 for state-building, including a Tangut Buddhist canon—a collection of scriptures. The earliest known dated Tangut writing is around 1070/1071. Tangut drew on Chinese writing and appeared after neighboring Khitan state scripts, another medieval northern Chinese writing tradition, but remained a distinct script. Tangut writing later carried official, classical, and Buddhist texts beyond the dynasty.
How do I type 𘗘?
Use Tangut-specific input software for repeated entry.
Tangut input tools include stroke-code files, which use a character’s strokes, and files based on reconstructed readings. If your editor offers Unicode code-point entry, enter U+185D8.
A font is a separate requirement: even a correctly encoded character can appear as a box when the selected font lacks Tangut coverage.
Historical and specialist; it fits Tangut language study, manuscript reading, and discussion of Tangut vocabulary.
