What 𘗤 means
It is the second character in an attested Tangut word for rain-or-snow boots.
A Tangut–English dictionary compiled by Li Fanwen lists entry 0375 for boots worn in rain or snow, next to entry 0350. A Unicode proposal identifies those entries as 𘗤 and 𘄛, giving the attested sequence 𘄛𘗤. The dictionary gloss belongs to the pair; it is not securely the meaning of 𘗤 by itself.
Why was Tangut writing made?
**Tangut writing served the Western Xia state's language, government, and religious texts.
Tangut was the language of the Western Xia, a medieval state in what is now northwestern China. Its script emerged around 1036 for administration and official writing. It also carried Buddhist translations from Chinese and Tibetan and appeared in printed books. After the Western Xia fell in 1227, people continued using Tangut writing in religious and other texts for centuries. Those dates describe the script's broader history, not when this single character first appeared.
Sent alone, 𘗤 reads as specialist Tangut text or an unexplained glyph.
Do not read “boots” from 𘗤 alone; that gloss belongs to 𘄛𘗤.
