What 𘗣 means
It is a Tangut character with the scholarly reading du.
A phonetic gloss—a note showing how to read a character—in a surviving manuscript records that reading. The transcription du is a sound clue, not a secure standalone English translation; the surrounding Tangut word supplies its lexical meaning.
How was Tangut writing used?
It served the Western Xia state and its religious life.
The earliest documented state use of Tangut script is placed in 1036–1037. Accounts differ about its principal designer: the official Yeli Renrong or a teacher called Iri.
Tangut served government records and law, and scholars translated major Buddhist works into it. After Western Xia fell, the script continued in religious writing and on monuments; the latest known Tangut inscription is dated 1502. Its forms drew on Chinese and Khitan writing traditions, but Tangut is a distinct script.
Historical and specialist: 𘗣 belongs in Tangut text, not everyday shorthand.
Drift: In 2026, type designers were still developing Tangut fonts for digital use.
