What 𘗺 means
Its strokes do not give an English translation.
Unicode’s name, “TANGUT IDEOGRAPH-185FA,” is an inventory label, not a gloss. To identify the Tangut reading and word, use a Tangut dictionary and the sentence around it; the character’s visual form is not a translation key.
The script was created for the Western Xia state under its first emperor about 1036 CE. It was used from about the 11th century through the 16th, continued under the Yuan and Ming dynasties, and became obsolete by the end of the Ming. Surviving material includes records, correspondence, Buddhist sutras (religious texts), inscriptions, and manuscripts.
How was Tangut used before Unicode?
It served government, religion, and written scholarship.
Western Xia officials used Tangut for administration and correspondence, and rulers sponsored a Buddhist canon—a collection of Buddhist scriptures. The court also used the script to mark a state identity distinct from Song China.
The record includes Confucian classics, encyclopedias, military treatises, and literature. Tangut forms were inspired by Chinese writing but make up a distinct script. The Khitan Small Script is a historical parallel: it too was state-sponsored and modeled on Chinese writing.
