Text symbol

What 𘘮 means

It is a higher-register Tangut word for “I,” “me,” or “my.”

It refers to the speaker, and the sentence determines which English form fits: “I” for the person acting, “me” for the person affected, or “my” before something owned. The ordinary Tangut form is 𗧓; 𗧅 and 𘓊𗸦 are separate imperial-register alternatives.

Why was Tangut writing created?

To support the Tangut state and its literature.

The script was created in 1036 under Tangut ruler Li Yuanhao as part of state-building. It gave Tangut, the language of the Western Xia state, a written form for administration, literature, and Buddhist scripture.

Its makers drew on Chinese writing; Tangut rulers also followed Khitan neighbors, who had created scripts earlier. Tangut was a different language from Chinese. Surviving texts include Buddhist and Confucian works, encyclopedias, military treatises, and literature. A Tangut homophone dictionary from the 12th century records 𘘮, providing a dated witness to its use.

Someone sent me 𘘮 — what does it mean?

A lone send needs its surrounding Tangut words before translation.

A reader who knows Tangut can recognize 𘘮 as a pronoun, but its sentence determines whether English needs “I,” “me,” or “my.” To someone who cannot read Tangut, the isolated character may be a quotation or a study fragment; it does not reveal a full message by itself.

A font can change the strokes or proportions you see while the encoded character remains the same.

Historical and elevated: 𘘮 is a higher-register Tangut first-person form, alongside ordinary and imperial alternatives.

A lone glyph cannot tell you whether English needs “I,” “me,” or “my.”
