What 𘘹 means

𘘹 is a character in the Tangut writing system.

Its Unicode label identifies it; it is not an English translation. The Sea of Writing, a Tangut rhyme dictionary, indexes it at 38.173 under Rhyme 30; Li Fanwen’s 2008 catalogue assigns it no. 1238. Tangut writing was created around 1036 under Western Xia’s first emperor, Li Yuanhao, to serve the state and support a written culture that included a Tangut Buddhist canon.

Tangut was inspired by Chinese writing but is not derived from it; proposed Khitan influence remains a scholarly possibility, not a settled link between individual characters. The script served Buddhist and secular works, including Confucian, military, encyclopedic, and literary texts. A Khara-Khoto manuscript probably dates to the 12th or early 13th century; Tangut remained in use through the Yuan and Ming dynasties before becoming obsolete. In modern scholarship, it appears chiefly in historical study and typography.

How do I type 𘘹?

Use a Tangut input method and a font with Tangut coverage.

Font coverage controls whether this character appears; font design may change its outline. A box means the active font lacks a Tangut glyph. Noto Serif Tangut and Tangut Yinchuan are examples of Tangut-capable fonts.

Most ordinary keyboard layouts do not include Tangut. Specialist input methods use codes or character components to narrow dictionary candidates; some RIME setups require loading a Tangut .dict.yaml file first.
