Why did Western Xia use Tangut writing?
To record Tangut and mark the kingdom’s identity. Tangut was the language of Western Xia, a kingdom in what is now northwestern China. Rulers established the Tangut script as an official way to write it in the 11th century. The oldest surviving document is an official message from 1072; a stone monument bears a Tangut inscription from 1502, showing that people continued writing after the kingdom fell.

Some mobile apps may lack a Tangut font, so they cannot draw the character. Tangut IME Online’s September 2025 page warns that copied Tangut text may fail to render in other mobile apps; a desktop computer with a Tangut font can display it.
