What 𘚍 means
It appears in a term about writing sounds.
A 2023 study translates the pair 𘚌𘚍 as “monosyllable” and says it is used only for phonetic transcription: writing sounds rather than meanings. The authors tentatively connect it to Tibetan yig, meaning “letter.”
The Tangut (Xixia) script was made official around 1036 to write Tangut and help distinguish the Western Xia state from Chinese language and culture. Its square forms follow Chinese character design, but it writes a separate language. It appeared beside Chinese in official life and carried Buddhist translations. It continued under Yuan and Ming rule, became obsolete by the end of the Ming dynasty, and was rediscovered in the late 19th century.
