Tangut character 1868E

5775/6136

𘚎 is a Tangut character; its reconstructed pronunciation does not give an English meaning on its own. The Tangut script was created to write the Tangut language in the Western Xia state. As of 2026, you are most likely to meet it in scholarship and digital work on Tangut texts; if someone sends it alone, ask for its source or surrounding text.

What 𘚎 means

A proposed pronunciation does not by itself give an English meaning.

An index to Li Fanwen's Tangut dictionary records a reconstructed reading: a scholarly proposal for how the character was pronounced. That reading is not an English translation.

The Tangut script was created under Western Xia's first emperor around 1036 to write the Tangut language. It appears in official, private, and religious texts, including Buddhist sutras (religious texts), inscriptions, and manuscripts. After Western Xia fell, it remained in use into the Yuan and Ming dynasties and became obsolete by the end of the Ming.

How does Tangut relate to Chinese writing?

Tangut and Chinese are separate scripts, though some characters resemble one another.

Tangut was developed to write the Tangut language. Similar-looking characters do not establish that 𘚎 is a Chinese character or has a direct link to any particular Chinese character.

Someone sent me 𘚎 — what does it mean?

Ask for the source or context before treating it as a translation.

On its own, 𘚎 has no dependable everyday chat reading for a general reader as of 2026. Treat a standalone message as historical or scholarly text, or ask the sender for its source and intended context.

An unclear two-character phrase, 𘚎𘚏, is tentatively read as “to compound” in a 2023 study. That contextual proposal does not establish a general meaning for 𘚎 by itself.

It reads as historical, scholarly, or typographic material, not an ordinary chat reaction.

Without shared Tangut context, the recipient may not know how to read it.

Why does 𘚎 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
