Tangut character 186A7

5800/6136

𘚧 is a Tangut character; its Unicode name identifies the sign but does not translate it. In a modern chat, an isolated 𘚧 is best treated as a reference to Tangut writing unless the sender supplies a gloss.

What 𘚧 means

This is Tangut writing; its specific word needs a reading or context.

𘚧’s Unicode name comes from its code point: it identifies the encoded sign, not the word it represented. Tangut was the writing system for the Tangut language used by Western Xia, a state in northwest China. A specialist can check Tangut dictionaries and surrounding passages; a newcomer needs the reading or passage supplied.

If someone sends it by itself, treat it as a reference to Tangut writing and ask which reading or text they mean.

Is 𘚧 Chinese?

No. Tangut is a separate script for a separate language. Tangut signs may resemble Chinese characters, but the writing systems are distinct. Shape alone is not evidence for a Chinese reading of 𘚧.

Around 1036, Western Xia made Tangut its state script for administration, literature, Buddhist works, and translated books. Separate institutions taught Tangut and Chinese writing. The earliest surviving Tangut document is a military dispatch from Guazhou dated 1072.

After Western Xia fell, Tangut writing remained in use, with evidence reaching 1502. By the end of the Ming dynasty it was obsolete; its later life became one of recovery and scholarship rather than everyday communication.

Why does 𘚧 look different in different fonts?

Your font supplies the visible form. Tangut sources also preserve variant glyph shapes, and fonts may draw the same encoded sign differently. If your font lacks Tangut coverage, a missing-glyph box can appear. It signals a display gap, not a different character or meaning.

On its own, it reads as a historical-script reference, not a familiar chat reaction.

Do not infer a Chinese reading from the shape.

Why does 𘚧 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.

Why is 𘚧 a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
