tangut ideograph-186b9

Tangut character 𘚹

5818/6136

𘚹 is a Tangut character translated as “round bone” in a Tangut–Chinese dictionary. Xixia (Western Xia) created its script around 1036 under Li Yuanhao to write the Tangut language and mark independence from Song China. It borrowed Chinese writing’s square forms; scripts of the neighboring Khitan people may also have influenced it, but Tangut remained distinct. A Buddhist inscription dated 1502 shows the script still in use long after Western Xia fell.

Why does 𘚹 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
