Tangut Ideograph-186D5

𘛕 is a Tangut character whose catalog translations conflict: a Unicode note calls it “gorgeous,” while a dictionary index links it to “to disobey.” Neither is a safe everyday translation on its own. The Tangut script served the Western Xia state and Buddhist and official writing; alone, this glyph leaves a sender's intent open.

What 𘛕 means

There is no settled everyday translation for 𘛕.

A gloss is a short catalog translation. A 2025 Unicode Working Group note labels 𘛕 “gorgeous”; an English index to Li Fanwen's 2008 Tangut dictionary places source entry 5830 under “to disobey.” The records conflict, so neither is a settled everyday translation.

The Tangut script was commissioned around 1036 under Li Yuanhao, ruler of Western Xia, for state-building, Buddhist translation, and a distinct Tangut identity. A surviving piece dated around 1070/1071 may be the earliest known Tangut writing. The script later carried Buddhist works, translations of Chinese texts, Confucian writing, encyclopedias, military treatises, literature, and legal records. Its strokes and character-building drew on Chinese writing, while its creation also belonged to a wider period of script-making among neighboring states, including the Khitan.

What does 𘛕 mean in a message?

Alone, it leaves the sender's intent open.

In a conversation about Tangut, it may be part of quoted text. Elsewhere, it may be a character specimen or decoration. Ask for the surrounding passage or source edition if the intended reading matters.

Archival or scholarly in Tangut material; outside it, striking but opaque.

Alone, it is not a reliable compliment; the “gorgeous” gloss is disputed.

Questions people ask

2

Is 𘛕 a Chinese character?

No. It is a Tangut character used to write the Tangut language. The script uses Chinese-influenced strokes and ways of building characters, but it is a separate writing system.

Why does 𘛕 look different in another font?

It can. Different fonts draw the same character with different strokes. If it appears as a box, the selected font likely lacks Tangut coverage; the underlying character is unchanged.
