What 𘛰 means
Its dictionary gloss is “a surname.”
Unicode maps it to entry 5551 in Li Fanwen’s 2008 Tangut–Chinese dictionary; the English index glosses that entry “a surname.”
Is 𘛰 Chinese or Tangut?
It is Tangut, though Chinese writing influenced its design.
Around 1036, Western Xia introduced Tangut writing for official records, a distinct written identity, and Buddhist translations.
The earliest surviving official document dates to 1072. Tangut writing continued after Western Xia fell in 1227; Buddhist prayer pillars at Baoding date to 1502. A close Khitan-script link has been proposed but remains disputed.
Why does 𘛰 show as a box?
A font may be missing the Tangut glyph.
A browser may show a box or replacement mark when no available font contains Tangut, though the text is intact.
As of 2026, Noto Serif Tangut is one available font for the script.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𘛰 show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.

𘛰\186F0Why is 𘛰 a box on my screen?
fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
