Tangut ideograph 186F1

A Tangut dictionary glosses 𘛱 as “wizard.” It belongs to the writing tradition of Western Xia, and its code-based Unicode label is only an identifier. If it appears as a square, the chosen font lacks Tangut coverage; the text still contains the same character.

What 𘛱 means

A Tangut dictionary glosses it as “wizard.”

The Tangut–Chinese dictionary by Li Fanwen lists it as entry 5552; an English index glosses that entry as “wizard.” Its Unicode label is built from its code point, so it identifies the sign but does not translate it.

Why was Tangut script created?

It gave the Tangut state a writing system for its language.

The Tangut script was developed in the eleventh century for Western Xia, a Tangut-led state in northwest China, to support official and cultural writing. One scholarly interpretation also sees political and cultural distance from Song China as part of the reason; that explains the script’s setting, not this character’s meaning.

The oldest transmitted Tangut document identified in the research literature is an official military-administration text dated 1072. Tangut writing also appears in private and religious materials, including books, sutras, inscriptions, and manuscripts.

After the Mongol conquest, Tangut fell out of daily use; bilingual documents and later scholarship made the surviving texts readable again. The script followed the Chinese character model. Scholars compare it with neighboring Khitan and Jurchen character scripts, but that comparison does not establish either as an ancestor of this sign.

How do I type 𘛱?

Use a Unicode input tool that accepts five hexadecimal digits.

Enter U186F1 in a Unicode input method that supports supplementary-plane characters. A four-digit-only hexadecimal field cannot enter this value.

Your chosen font also needs Tangut coverage. An empty square means the font lacks the glyph; the text still contains 𘛱.

Historical and specialist: it identifies Tangut text; reading it requires knowledge of the language and script.

A recipient without Tangut font support may see a square instead of the character.

Why does 𘛱 show as a square?

The display font lacks Tangut coverage, so the app cannot draw the glyph. A Tangut-capable font can show it; the stored text remains 𘛱.
