What 𘛽 means
It means “body” or “physical form.” A scholarly list pairs it with Chinese 身 (“body/self”) as a gloss, not an alternate spelling.
Western Xia’s first emperor sponsored the script around 1036 for state records and religious texts, also marking Tangut identity. The earliest surviving document dates to 1072. Tangut draws on Chinese-character conventions but is distinct; proposed Khitan influence is debated. It continued through the Yuan and Ming periods, then became obsolete.
Historical writing, encountered in dictionaries and archival study.
The gloss gives a word, not why someone sent the glyph alone.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𘛽 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
