What 𘜍 means
Its dictionary gloss is “surname”; phan is the scholarly reconstructed reading.
Western Xia commissioned Tangut writing in 1036 for official use. It carried Buddhist scriptures, Chinese classics, military works and literature. A Khara-Khoto manuscript probably dates to the 12th or early 13th century.
Tangut writing drew on Chinese writing principles and was historically connected to scripts developed by neighboring Khitan states. It remained in use into the mid-Ming period, then fell out of everyday reading.
Historical and specialist; phan is a scholarly transcription of the reconstructed reading.
