What 𘜑 means
Scholars reconstruct its reading as *pa¹, roughly “pah.” The Tangut word is treated as a borrowing from Middle Chinese, an older stage of Chinese.
Tangut writing was created under the Western Xia court around 1036 to write the Tangut language. It remained in use through the Yuan and Ming; a Buddhist stone inscription dated 1502 is the last datable example.
As of 2026, digital type designers adapt historical Tangut forms for fonts, so this glyph’s details may vary by font.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𘜑 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
