What 𘜷 means
In Tangut, 𘜷 means “peach”; a dictionary transcribes its reading as do.
The Tangut state ordered its script in 1036 under Emperor Li Yuanhao for state-building. It gave the Tangut language an official written form and served Buddhist scriptures and translations of Chinese classics and other works. The Tangut rulers followed their Khitan neighbors’ example: Khitan rulers had created two scripts a century earlier.
Is 𘜷 a Chinese character?
No. 𘜷 belongs to Tangut writing, not Chinese.
Tangut characters were modeled visually on Chinese writing, but the scripts are separate, so similar shapes do not automatically share readings.
In the mid-12th century, Sea of Characters, a Tangut rhyme dictionary—a book that groups words by sound—analyzed characters through recurring components. The Chinese character 桃 also means “peach”; it is a translation equivalent, not another Tangut form.
A historically specific character: it belongs in Tangut writing or discussion, not as generic Chinese-style decoration.
Its square form does not make it Chinese; replacing it with 桃 changes the script.
