What 𘜾 means
It is a Tangut character glossed as “Chinese parasol tree.” A Tangut dictionary index records its scholarly reading as thwo, a Latin-letter transcription.
Around 1036, Western Xia ruler Li Yuanhao commissioned the Tangut script for his state. It served official writing and Buddhist texts, including translations of Chinese and Tibetan works.
Tangut is a separate script for the Tangut language, though its characters can look structurally similar to Chinese ones. Nearby Khitan and Jurchen states also developed writing systems of their own. Tangut writing remained in use into the Yuan and Ming dynasties and was obsolete by the end of the Ming.
