tangut ideograph-187a6

Tangut Ideograph 187A6

6055/6136

𘞦 is a historical Tangut character; a specialist index lists its reconstructed reading, źier, not an English gloss. Tangut writing, developed under Western Xia (Xixia), recorded its language and Chinese works and remained in use long after the state fell. A Tangut font is needed to display it, so a box can mean the glyph is missing.

What 𘞦 means

A Tangut index gives the reconstructed reading źier, not an English gloss.

The spelling źier is a scholarly reconstruction of how this character was read; it is not a translation of the Tangut word. Its Unicode label is an identifying name, not a translation.

Tangut is a separate historical script. Its characters can look like Chinese characters, but Unicode describes Tangut ideographs as historically unrelated to Chinese ideographs.

When did Tangut writing begin?

It began around 1036 under the Western Xia state, called Xixia.

Tangut writing served the state by recording the Tangut language and official events, and by translating major Chinese works.

After Western Xia fell to the Mongols, Tangut writing continued in texts from the Yuan and Ming dynasties; it had become obsolete by the end of the Ming.

Why does 𘞦 appear as a box?

A font or app without Tangut coverage cannot draw the character.

The Noto Serif Tangut font was designed for this script, but the receiving app also has to use a font that includes the glyph.

On a mobile app, the Unicode text may survive even when the glyph does not render; the recipient may see a blank box.

Historical-script material; any specific sense depends on its Tangut-language context.

Without a Tangut font, a recipient may see a blank box.

Can I type 𘞦 with a Chinese keyboard?
