What 𘟌 means
A Tangut dictionary glosses it as “pepper.” Linguists reconstruct its lost reading as *tsar¹, an estimated historical form written in Latin letters, and compare it with Sichuan pepper rather than chili.
The Tangut script was commissioned in 1036 as part of building the Tangut state of Western Xia. It drew on Chinese writing and the earlier Khitan writing system, but was not derived from Chinese. It served government documents and translations; Buddhist books were also written in it. At Khara-Khoto, a Gobi Desert site, Tangut manuscripts date to the 12th or early 13th century.
It signals specialist Tangut text; gloss it as “pepper” for readers unfamiliar with the script.
