Tangut character 187DE

6111/6136

What 𘟞 means

In a Unicode-aware editor, enter hexadecimal 187DE.

The exact key sequence depends on your operating system. Some Tangut input methods let you choose a character by its stroke pattern or phonetic spelling.

Typing and display are separate: the receiving app needs a font that includes Tangut characters.

What does 𘟞 mean?

Its chart entry points to a source, not an English gloss.

The chart cites L2008-5309, a scholarly source entry, rather than giving a word-for-word English meaning. Scholars may also use a pronunciation reconstructed from historical evidence to identify the entry; that is a reading aid, not a translation. The surrounding passage in a translated Tangut text is needed to tell which English word fits.

When did Tangut writing take shape?

It grew under the Western Xia and survived the state.

The Tangut script was developed under the Western Xia court, the Tangut-ruled kingdom, around 1036–1037. The earliest surviving example identified in scholarship is an official document sent to Guazhou in 1072. The script served state records, schooling, and translations, including Buddhist and Chinese works.

After Western Xia fell in 1227, people continued writing Tangut in religious and other texts; the latest known dated example is a 1502 stone pillar inscribed with a dharani, a Buddhist sacred formula. The Sea of Characters, a 12th-century rhyming dictionary, groups entries through shared Tangut components. Tangut forms were shaped within a Chinese-character writing tradition; proposed Khitan writing influence remains debated. By 2026, digital Tangut work included dictionaries, manuscript catalogues, and font tools.

Scholarly and archival: this is a historical Tangut text character, not a self-explanatory English translation.

Tangut's historical use of Chinese-character models does not make this a Chinese reading.

Why is 𘟞 a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
