Telugu letter ḍa

32/100

డ is Telugu ḍa: say d with your tongue tip curled back and your vocal cords vibrating, then add a short a. A vowel sign called a gunintam changes that built-in vowel; the virama removes it. Its script lineage runs from Brahmi through a shared Telugu–Kannada stage.

What డ means

It is a voiced d made with the tongue tip curled back. That curled-back position is called retroflex; voiced means the vocal cords vibrate. In Telugu letter డ pronunciation, the dot under ḍ in the roman spelling ḍa marks that tongue position. A gunintam vowel sign changes the built-in short a: డా is ḍā, with a long aa, and డి is ḍi, with short i.

The Telugu script grew from regional forms of Southern Brahmi, an early South Asian writing system. By the 6th century, Telugu and Kannada shared an ancestor script called Proto-Telugu–Kannada; by the 13th century, Telugu had become a distinct script. This is a historical connection with Kannada, not a link inferred from similar-looking forms.

The script recorded language in inscriptions on stone or metal and in manuscripts. Southern script branches first served Pali and Sanskrit, then were adapted for Dravidian languages. Early Telugu–Kannada inscriptional forms are documented from the 4th–7th centuries CE. The Kalamalla inscription, around 575 CE, is described as the earliest complete inscription in Telugu; a Telangana inscription from 660 CE uses old Telugu–Kannada letters for Sanskrit. Some sounds made near the ridge behind the teeth shifted toward this curled-tongue d after nasal sounds such as n or m; early writing preserves distinctions that later merged.

Why does డ change inside words?

A vowel sign replaces its built-in a; a virama removes it. So డ, డా, and డి share a consonant but make different syllables. A vowel sign may appear beside or around the base; that is Telugu shaping, not a different letter.

In a consonant cluster, the virama comes before the next consonant. The following letter may appear smaller below or take a special shape. An invisible zero-width non-joiner (ZWNJ) can stop the letters from joining.

Neutral in Telugu writing.

Do not replace it with ద: that letter uses a different tongue position.
