tetragram for kinship

Tetragram for Kinship

40/87

The meaning of 𝌧 is kinship: in the Tai Xuan Jing, a Chinese divination classic, it means more than family ties. The original text also connects the bond with sincerity and courteous hospitality. Sent alone, it cannot tell you whether the sender means relatives, friendship, or affection.

What 𝌧 means

It frames kinship as a matter of human conduct.

In the Tai Xuan Jing, this entry includes benevolence, sincerity, loyalty, and harmony in its account of kinship. Its nine appraisals (short judgments) describe courteous hospitality and trust, false closeness that hides conflict, allies lost through neglect, and gathering people without force.

In a message, this history supports a deliberate reference to kinship or classical divination. The sign alone cannot tell whether the sender means relatives, friendship, or affection.

How does 𝌧 relate to the Tai Xuan Jing?

It belongs to a Chinese classic for divination.

The Tai Xuan Jing, or Classic of the Great Mystery, was composed by Yang Xiong and completed around 2 BCE. It adapted the Yijing, or Book of Changes, as a companion system for reading changing situations through signs. It contains 81 figures; each uses four positions, and each position has three line states. Both a line’s state and its position shape the figure’s reading.

The oldest surviving textual version is a Jin-dynasty redaction (an edited version) associated with Fan Wang. In annotated Tai Xuan texts, this kinship entry is paired with 比, the Yijing figure glossed “Holding Together.” This pairing links the Tai Xuan entry with a figure from a different divination system.

Scholarly and specialized; it points to the Tai Xuan Jing more readily than to casual warmth.

Don’t expect a reader to recognize it as an ordinary family or affection symbol.

Why does 𝌧 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
