Hexagram for Holding Together

8/64

䷇ is the I Ching figure of holding together: joining around a worthy center. Its reading favors sincere commitment made in time and warns against joining only after success is obvious. It belongs to divination, so outside that context it can look like an unfamiliar text character.

What ䷇ means

Join the right people sincerely, and do it before hesitation hardens. In this reading, unity is fortunate when it has a sound center and lasting integrity. The test is whether the person, group, or commitment deserves your loyalty, not whether it is popular.

The Zhou Yi, the text at the heart of the I Ching, uses this figure in divination. The oldest surviving records of Zhou Yi divination span 671–487 BCE. By the fourth century BCE, the text was also quoted rhetorically. Records from the Qin period show private consultations about ordinary concerns.

How is it linked to hexagram 7?

Their patterns are inverses, but their readings are not interchangeable. The figure places water over earth, an image of gathering and harmonizing. A changing line redirects a reading to the weakness or responsibility that needs attention; it may lead to a resulting hexagram. The judgment cautions against unity without a worthy center, false allies, and attaching yourself only after the outcome is clear.

A study of a Zhou Yi manuscript written on bamboo strips and held by Shanghai Museum links ䷇ structurally to , hexagram 7, the Army, through inversion: their patterns turn into one another. That is a structural connection, not a reason to treat their readings as interchangeable.

Why does ䷇ look different in different fonts?

The font draws its lines; Unicode does not lock one exact shape. ䷇ is rendered by the font on your device, and reference glyph shapes are not prescriptive. A fallback box or unfamiliar line weight is a display problem, not a new reading.

Scholarly and specialized: it points to the I Ching rather than casual chat.

Without I Ching context, it may not read clearly as a relationship sign.

Questions people ask

1

Why does ䷇ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
