Tifinagh Letter Yah

17/59

In Moroccan Neo-Tifinagh, ⵀ represents the breathy consonant /h/. Its label “yah” is not a sound guide: Central Atlas, Kabyle, and Chenoua Tifinagh assign the same glyph different values. Tifinagh is Amazigh writing with a long regional history.

What ⵀ means

In Moroccan Neo-Tifinagh, ⵀ represents the breathy consonant /h/.

“Yah” names this Unicode character; it does not predict its sound in every Tifinagh spelling. Central Atlas assigns ⵀ the /h/ sound, Kabyle uses ⵁ for /h/, and Chenoua assigns ⵀ the /b/ sound. Read it by the spelling system of the language, not by its Unicode name.

How did Tifinagh develop across North Africa?

Tifinagh developed from Libyco-Berber writing across regional traditions. Libyco-Berber was an ancient script associated with Amazigh languages. One historical overview dates Tifinagh writing to at least the fourth century BCE; a separate epigraphic account treats a bilingual inscription on an upright stone from 149 BCE as the earliest incontestable evidence. Scholars debate influence from Phoenician and Punic writing traditions versus local development; the evidence does not settle the question.

In traditional Tuareg use, Tifinagh appears in practical and love messages, writing games, and occasional private notes; long literary works were less common. The ancient Libyco-Berber record does not establish a single original purpose.

Modern Neo-Tifinagh adapted historical forms and added letters for Amazigh, also called Berber, languages across the Maghreb. In Moroccan education and public writing, Tifinagh can also signal Amazigh identity.

To readers who know the script, it identifies Tifinagh writing; others may not know how to read it.

Do not infer the sound from “yah”; check the language’s Tifinagh spelling.

Questions people ask

1

Why does ⵀ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
