To give Toto a community-chosen writing system.
Work began in 2014; community elder Dhaniram Toto introduced the alphabet in May 2015. Earlier Toto writing used Bengali or Latin spellings. Researchers reported Toto literacy lessons in 2024, alongside continuing use of those spellings.
