What ꔆ means
ꔆ represents a syllable in written Vai.
Vai speakers developed the writing system in Liberia in the early 1830s for the Vai language, also spoken in Sierra Leone; Momolu Duwalu Bukele is chiefly credited. The earliest known surviving sample dates to 1834.
Early communities organized teaching. The script served letters, family and business records, and trade correspondence; later recorded use centered on correspondence and record-keeping, especially among merchants and traders.
Why does ꔆ show as a square?
A font without Vai support cannot display ꔆ.
The text may still contain the character while a browser or app substitutes an empty square or question mark. Choose a font with Vai coverage and view the text again; the display failure does not give the syllable a new meaning.
Neutral in tone; this character belongs inside Vai text.
A box or question mark usually points to missing Vai font support.

Questions people ask
1Is the Vai script related to Cherokee?
Not conclusively. Researchers have proposed contact through missionaries or a Cherokee emigrant in Liberia, but that does not establish direct descent. Later Mende, Loma, and Kpelle scripts have a clearer documented stimulus from Vai.
